SS316L Plates vs SS304 Plates: What’s the Difference?
In the Philippines, stainless steel plates are used everywhere—from buildings and factories to ships and water facilities. Two of the most common grades are SS304 and SS316L. While they may look the same, they are designed for different environments.
SS304 plates are the most commonly used stainless steel. They offer good strength, are easy to fabricate, and resist rust in normal conditions. In the Philippine setting, SS304 works well for indoor applications, general fabrication, kitchen equipment, architectural panels, tanks, and projects located away from the sea. Because it is widely available and more affordable, SS304 is often the first choice for many commercial and industrial uses.
SS316L plates are designed for tougher environments. They contain molybdenum, which gives them much better resistance to corrosion caused by salt, chemicals, and moisture. The “L” stands for low carbon, which makes SS316L easier to weld and helps prevent corrosion around weld areas. This makes it especially suitable for the Philippines’ coastal and humid conditions.
As a result, SS316L plates are commonly used in shipbuilding, ports, coastal power plants, water treatment facilities, chemical plants, and food & pharmaceutical factories. These industries need materials that can last longer and stay clean, even in harsh conditions.
In short, SS304 is a practical and cost-effective choice for general use, while SS316L is the better option for coastal, chemical, and high-corrosion environments, where durability and reliability are more important than upfront cost.
